Peranakan Museum in Singapore (Part 1)

If you want to know a country better, their museum reflects everything.Singapore has 5 museums. Instead of visit their national museum,this time I choose to take a look at their Peranakan Museum.

Okay,what is 'Peranakan' means???
For centuries, foreign merchants from countries like China and India were attracted to Southeast Asia's lucrative trades in fine products such as textiles, spices and more. Most returned home with the monsoon, but some remain behind, marrying local women. The descendents of these intermarriages are referred as 'Peranakans', which means locally born in Malay.

The babas  and nyonyas(baba refer to man and nyoya refer to lady) in the early 20th! In the left is their wedding picture.
Look at how wealthy they are at that time!

Now is their 'Sarong Kebaya ' exhibition time

These were all the Sarong Kebaya , favoured fashion of Peranakan women for generations from 16th century to early 20th century.

Sarong-A skirt consisting of a length of cloth sew together to form a wide tube.

Kebaya-An open jacket derived from an Islamic robe.

All were made of silk and cotton!

Okay, now into their wedding!

These were those baba and nyota wore during their wedding.

Wedding baskets or bakul siah

which means auspicious basket are important element in Peranakan weddings.Wealthy families used basket like this beautiful pair to transport valuable gifts during their twelve days wedding.

4 plates which represent each layer in the basket.This is the one bride's family gave to the bridegroom 's family.

this is then the bridegroom's family return to the bride's family

This was likely the family used them to bear important item used in a wedding like jewellery.

Then, the wedding in 16th century.

Besides the bride is the Sang Khek Umm who guide the bride in her movement while beside the bridegroom is the Pak Chindek.

What are the Nyoyas do mostly?

Nyoyas were trained for married life from a young age. They were expected to devote long hours to perfect the art of beadwork and embroidery.

So these is their masterpiece

All were sewed by hand using beads .

Now sarong kebayas in late 19th and early 20th century

Left one was known as baju panjang

And I spotted these two kinds of sarong kebaya that I never seen before. This kind of kebayas was influenced by fashion trends of Shanghai and HongKong .

These kind of baju kurung are mostly worn by caucasians in the overseas. Because of the cold weather so the kebayas is thick.
